Bayesian Uncertainty Quantification for Functional Response

    Get PDF
This chapter addresses the stochastic modeling of functional response, which is a major concern in engineering implementation. We first introduce a general framework and several conventional models for functional data, including the functional linear model, penalized regression splines, and the spatial temporal model. However, in engineering practice, a naive mathematical modeling of functional response may fail due to the lack of expressing the underlying physical mechanism. We propose a series of quasiphysical models to handle the functional response. A motivating example of metamaterial design is thoroughly discussed to demonstrate the idea of quasiphysical models. In real applications, various uncertainties have to be taken into account, such as that of the permittivity or permeability of the substrate of the metamaterial. For the propagation of uncertainty, simulationā€based methods are discussed. A Bayesian framework is presented to deal with the model calibration in the case of functional response. Experimental results illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method

The article of record as published may be found at http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.8b01600Biohazards and chemical hazards as well as radioactive hazards have always been a threat to human health. The search for solutions to these problems is an ongoing worldwide effort. In order to control biohazards by chemical methods, a synthetically useful fused tricyclic iodine-rich compound, 2,6-diiodo-3,5-dinitro-4,9-dihydrodipyrazolo [1,5a:5',1'-d][1,3,5]triazine (5), with good detonation performance was synthesized, characterized, and its properties determined. This compound which acts as an agent defeat weapon has been shown to destroy certain microorganisms effectively by releasing iodine after undergoing decomposition or combustion. The small iodine residues remaining will not be deleterious to human life after 1 month.Financial support of the Office of Naval Research (N00014-16- 1-2089), and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (HDTRA 1-15-1-0028) is gratefully acknowledged. The article of record as published may be found atĀ https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.7b02277Energetic bridged triiodopyrazoles and triiodoimidazoles were designed and synthsized by reacting potassium triiodopyrazolate or triiodoimidazolate with corresponding dichloro compounds. All compounds were fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. The structure of compound 1 was further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All of the compounds exhibit good thermal stability with decomposition temperatures between 199 and 270 Ā°C and high densities ranging from 2.804 to 3.358 g/cm3. The detonation performances and the detonation products were calculated by CHEETAH 7. Compound 3 (Dv = 4765 m sā€“1; P = 17.9 GPa) and compound 7 (Dv = 4841 m sā€“1; P = 18.5 GPa) show comparable detonation pressure to TNT, and high iodine content makes them promising as energy and biocides storage compounds. This work was supported by the Office of Naval Research (N00014-16-1-2089) and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (HDTRA 1-15-1-0028). The authors thank the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, Vancouver, WA (Reference No.: 2014120: MNL:11/20/2014), for funds to purchase a 500 MHz NMR spectrometer.

Functional conservation and divergence of Miscanthus lutarioriparius GT43 gene family in xylan biosynthesis

Background: Xylan is the most abundant un-cellulosic polysaccharides of plant cell walls. Much progress in xylan biosynthesis has been gained in the model plant species Arabidopsis. Two homologous pairs Irregular Xylem 9 (IRX9)/9L and IRX14/14L from glycosyltransferase (GT) family 43 have been proved to play crucial roles in xylan backbone biosynthesis. However, xylan biosynthesis in grass such as Miscanthus remains poorly understood

Cloud Market Maker: An automated dynamic pricing marketplace for cloud users

Ā© 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract Cloud providers commonly incur heavy upfront set up costs which remain almost constant whether they serve a single or many customers. In order to generate a return on this investment, a suitable pricing strategy is required by providers. Established industries such as the airlines employ dynamic pricing to maximize their revenues. In order to increase their resource utilization rates, cloud providers could also use dynamic pricing for their services. At present however most providers use static schemes for pricing their resources. This work presents a new dynamic pricing mechanism for cloud providers. Furthermore, at present no platform exists that provides a dynamic unified view of the different cloud offerings in real-time. Due to a rapidly changing landscape and a limited knowledge of the cloud marketplace, consumers can often end up choosing a cloud provider that is more expensive or does not give them what they really need. This is because some providers spend significantly on advertising their services online. In order to assist cloud customers in the selection of a suitable resource and cloud providers in implementing dynamic pricing, this work describes an automated dynamic pricing marketplace and a decision support system for cloud users. We present a multi-agent multi-auction based system through which such services are delivered. An evaluation has been carried out to determine how effectively the Cloud Market Maker selects the resource, dynamically adjusts the price for the cloud users and the suitability of dynamic pricing for the cloud environment
